Heavy Bleeding - Fremont, CA

Bleeding problems can make your life miserable. Depending on the cause, there can be abnormal cycles, painful intercourse and severe menstrual cramps. Shakira B. Karipineni, MD, is a board-certified gynecologist who is skilled and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal bleeding. We take a careful, thorough approach to finding the source of your problem and then recommend the safest, most effective treatment possible.

What causes bleeding problems?

Bleeding abnormalities are often caused by:

Endometriosis – Occurs when the tissue that lines the uterus grows out into other parts of the body and scar tissue builds up. This can cause abnormal bleeding and, sometimes, severe, ongoing pain or bowel problems.

Uterine fibroids – Noncancerous growths inside or outside the uterus. At their smallest, fibroids are only a few millimeters in size, but they can grow to the size of a grapefruit. As fibroids grow, they make their presence known by causing symptoms like heavy periods, bleeding between cycles, painful intercourse, low back pain and pressure or fullness in the abdomen.

Menorrhagia – Is excessive bleeding that can be a sign of premenopause or a symptom of another problem.

We will take a menstrual history and conduct a pelvic examination to make sure the source of your bleeding is your uterus and not your bladder, vagina or cervix. In most cases, a pelvic exam can help identify fibroids, but we may recommend an ultrasound exam for confirmation. If we feel patches of endometriosis during your pelvic exam, we will recommend a minimally invasive outpatient procedure called laparoscopy to confirm the finding.

Advanced treatment methods.

Whatever the cause of your uterine bleeding, we will present you with the most conservative treatment options first (e.g. oral medication, hormone injection therapy, nutrition changes). In the unlikely event that surgery is required, you’re in excellent hands with Dr. Karipineni. She has helped women for years and she offers you some of today’s most advanced, effective procedures, including:

Endometrial thermal or cryoablation – These are minimally invasive alternatives to hysterectomy that involve the removal of the uterine lining using heat or cold procedures. We also treat endometriosis using advanced laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic vaginal or supracervical hysterectomy (LSH) – These minimally invasive procedures are performed through a few tiny incisions, resulting in less scarring and shorter recovery time than traditional “open” surgery. In addition, we are highly trained and experienced with all other hysterectomy options.

Don’t assume your problem will go away on its own.

If you’re suffering from abnormal bleeding, it’s important that you get it treated as soon as possible. Call and schedule your appointment with our ob/gyn specialist today.
